The world is full of wonderful things and stunning places to explore. The Rainbow Mountains of China within the Zhangye Danxia Landform Geological Park are a masterpiece of nature, famous for the spectacular colorful mountain range of rock formation – with mixed colors of red, yellow, blue, white, green that mimic a rainbow painted over the tops of rolling mountains.
The Zhangye Danxia National Park is located in the Gansu province in China’s northwest covering 200 square miles.
It took more than 24 million years of arduous deposition of mineral settlings with different colors to form layers. As time passed by, with erosion, wind, and weather, the colorful layers were formed.
The primary color is a deep red sandstone. The red coloring is due to an iron oxide coating and cementation, also known as hematite (Fe2O3), between the sandstone grains.
