Roof tiles that also provide house for birds

To find a solution to the shrinking bird population in urban areas, one product designer from The Netherlands, Klaas Kuiken, was inspired to get creative and designed the Birdhouse Roof tile – something to replace standard ceramic roof tiles.

The idea behind the Birdhouse Roof tile is to provide a nesting place on your roof for birds. It is directly placed beneath the roof tile, and this location provides plenty of ventilation for nesting birds.

Klaas Kuiken’s concept later inspired Hitit Terra, a Çorum-based terracotta manufacturer, to mass-produce these unique roof tiles.
Hitit Terra’s roof tiles were tested and after the testing phase, Hitit Terra redesigned the tiles based on the demand and feedback. They are now manufacturing 5 different designs to accommodate different species of migratory birds.
